The Saarbrücken district Kaninchenberg is with 228 ha by far the second largest district within the district St. Johann in Saarbrücken.
The share of forest is 8,5 %. The population is 1675 inhabitants. The population loss within the last 16 years was over 15%, which is significantly higher than the city average. The unemployment rate of 10.1% is significantly higher than in the other districts of this part of the city and also higher than that of the city as a whole.
On the namesake Rabbit Mountain, 265.4 m high, are the little-known remains of a princely pleasure palace. The castle was built in 1722 under Count Carl Ludwig von Nassau-Saarbrücken and destroyed during the French Revolution in 1793. Apart from a kind of rock grotto, foundation walls of a building can still be found.
In the past, there were also two wells on Kaninchenberg: the Strummersbrunnen and the Holzbrunnen. These were tributaries of the Kieselbach stream. The wells have since been drained.
The Saarbrücken Ost rail stop is located on the Kaninchenberg.
