Nordpark, Magdeburg
Facts and practical information
Nordpark in Magdeburg is a 10-hectare public green space in the Alte Neustadt district. It was laid out in 1827 according to plans by Peter Josef Lenné as the North Cemetery. It is noteworthy that only recumbent grave slabs were allowed. In 1889, the cemetery was transformed into a public square. Even today, gravestone slabs, some of formerly famous Magdeburgers, are scattered throughout the park. A larger contiguous complex is formed by a Soviet cemetery of honor with 1652 graves, which was originally intended for the fallen Soviet soldiers of the Second World War, but until 1966 was also used for deceased soldiers of the Magdeburg garrison.
The park is freely accessible. It is very popular with the students of the adjacent Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg. Especially the public barbecue areas in the park are very popular in summer.
A natural spectacle every spring is the blossoming of blue starflower throughout the park area.
