Facts and practical information
The Vechta Local Court is a court of ordinary jurisdiction and one of eleven local courts in the district of the Oldenburg Regional Court.
The seat of the court is Vechta in Lower Saxony, the judicial district covers the entire county of Vechta. Superior to the District Court of Vechta is the Regional Court of Oldenburg, the competent Higher Regional Court is the Higher Regional Court of Oldenburg.
The main building was erected in 1954 and enlarged by an extension in 1977. The narrowly spaced row of windows on the longitudinal front follows models from the garden city movement of the 1920s. Under the ridge of the roof on the front side facing north is a 2-meter-high sandstone relief Jüngling mit Lanze und Taube, created in 1955 by the Oldenburg artist Marie-Luise Ahlhorn-Packenius. In front of the main entrance, a bronze sculpture Der Ritt gegen das Vorurteil by Peter Lehmann from Bissel was erected in 1993.
The court is located on a plot of land where the garden island of Vechta Castle was located in the Middle Ages and early modern times. After the castle was abandoned at the end of the 17th century, the land was used as the garden of the Franciscan monastery, and then as part of the walled area of the correctional facility.
