Adam Opel, Rüsselsheim
Facts and practical information
The Adam Opel Monument is a bronze statue in the southern Hessian town of Rüsselsheim am Main. It was created in 1937 by the Frankfurt sculptor Emil Hub and depicts in larger-than-life size the factory owner Adam Opel, who laid the foundation for today's globally operating automobile manufacturer Opel by founding his sewing machine and bicycle factory. The sculpture was cast by A. Komo & Sohn, Frankfurt.
The statue, 3.35 meters high and weighing 4.5 tons, depicts the industrialist standing with a coat and a hat in his right hand.
The occasion for its erection was the 75th anniversary of Adam Opel AG, which coincided with the 100th birthday of the company's founder, who died in 1895. The unveiling of the monument on August 7, 1937 by Privy Councillor Wilhelm von Opel, the second oldest of Adam Opel's five sons and at that time chairman of the company's supervisory board, was integrated into a weekend of festivities held to mark the 500th anniversary of the granting of the town's charter.
The original location of the monument was factory gate 20 on the western edge of the city at the junction of Weisenauer Strasse and Mainzer Strasse. It remained there until 1980 and was then placed on the newly designed square in front of the station. Due to a renewed reconstruction of the station forecourt towards the end of the 1980s, it was moved by a few meters before it was moved again by a few meters in July 2005 in the course of the new station construction and has since stood in front of the main entrance to the Opel plant. In November 2014, the monument had severe damage after two car accidents and had to be taken down for repair.
