Schloss Westerholt
Facts and practical information
Westerholt Castle is a moated castle in the Westerholt district of Herten on the edge of the Westerholt Forest. The complex, which is surrounded by moats, is still the ancestral seat of the Count's dynasty of Westerholt, which was first mentioned in documents here as early as 1193 and later called itself von "Westerholt zu Gysenberg". Together with Herten Castle, Westerholt Castle is one of the most important castle complexes in the former Vest Recklinghausen.
As early as the middle of the 14th century, a fortified complex was mentioned on this site, but nothing remains of this old castle except for the moats. In the course of numerous reconstructions and new buildings, Westerholt lost its fortified character and presents itself to the visitor today as a 19th century castle built in the style of classicism. Its manor house houses a hotel, while the outbuildings are used as a restaurant and café.
