Aussichtsturm Kirchberg, Helmbrechts
Facts and practical information
The Kirchberg lookout tower is a lookout tower on the Kirchberg mountain in the Upper Franconian town of Helmbrechts.
The tower stands on the mostly wooded Kirchberg on the northern edge of the town area. A watchtower used to stand on the same spot. Margrave Friedrich issued a guard order in 1498 to protect his margraviate of Brandenburg-Kulmbach. The sophisticated observation and signaling system with sentry posts in all parts of the principality served as advance warning of attacks, both in feuds and in times of war. The watchtower on the Kirchberg was part of this late medieval defense system.
Today's lookout tower was built in 1895 by the Verschönerungsverein Helmbrechts, raised in 1940 and renovated in 1994. It has a height of 22 meters. The tower is accessible, the key is deposited in the neighboring restaurant.
