Wasserpark Wennigsen, Wennigsen
Facts and practical information
Wennigsen Water Park is an artificial swimming lake in the municipality of Wennigsen. It was created through the work of a citizens' initiative, which reacted to the closure of the municipal outdoor swimming pool. It is located in the landscape conservation area LSG-H-31 Norddeister in the Hannover region.
When the water park opened in 2000, it was the first of its kind in northern Germany. It is still one of the largest man-made natural pools in northern Germany. A regeneration pond ensures natural purification of the water by means of autochthonous water plants, and chemicals can be dispensed with. The treated water is returned to the large bathing pond via a spring pond. This is divided into a swimmer and a non-swimmer area. All around are extensive sunbathing lawns, which are surrounded by trees. There is a diving rock as well as a swimming island and a small waterfall. For children, in addition to some playground equipment, there is a large sand field that can be transformed into a large mud field with the help of a child-proof water pump.
The municipality of Wennigsen subsidizes the water park with 100,000 euros per year. The park is used by around 20,000 visitors per season.
On the site of the water park, the then municipality of Wennigsen had already built an outdoor swimming pool in 1927. It cost 18,000 Reichsmarks and was fed by fresh Deister water.
