The Rheinische Industriebahn-Museum e. V. was founded in Cologne in 1987. The association's goal is the preservation of industrial railroad vehicles and the research and documentation of their history. The association's headquarters has been the former Köln-Nippes depot since 1992.
The RIM owns one of the largest collections of its kind in Germany with about 70 traction units of different gauges and traction types that were used in many different industries from mining to brickworks. The main focus is on locomotives manufactured in Cologne by the Deutz company and locomotives from the Arnold Jung Lokomotivfabrik in Kirchen-Jungenthal an der Sieg.
