Südstadt, Bonn

Südstadt is a district of the Federal City of Bonn in the city district of the same name with about 10,000 inhabitants. Located south of the city center, the district is bounded by Regina-Pacis-Weg, Poppelsdorfer Allee, Reuterstraße, Kaiserstraße, Weberstraße and the Rhine. It is also known as Bonner Talviertel, the southeastern foothills of Südstadt belong to the district of Gronau.

Together with Bonn's Weststadt, Südstadt is often referred to as the largest contiguous Gründerzeit neighborhood in Germany. Its architects include Anton Becker, Anton Butscheidt, Max Cronenberg, Carl Edler, Hermann Schmitt and Wilhelm Weinreis. Many students as well as families with children live in Südstadt. There are also many fraternity houses. The many restaurants and pubs contribute to the residential value and popularity of the strongly green district.

Particularly noteworthy is the Catholic St. Elisabeth Church, which was built in the style of historicism as a neo-Romanesque basilica. The Protestant equivalent is the Luther Church on Reuterstrasse.

The southern part of the city is intersected by the busy left bank of the Rhine, which is the origin of the Bonn saying "Entweder et räänt oder de Barrier is eraff", which was supplemented in capital times by the addition "und wenn beidet zesammekütt, es Staatsbesooch".

The green spaces that characterize the district include the Poppelsdorfer Allee, the Stadtgarten and above all the Hofgarten, which became known throughout Germany in the 1980s as a result of large political demonstrations.
