Stadthaus, Leipzig
Facts and practical information
The Stadthaus has been the seat of part of Leipzig's city administration since 1912. It is located within Leipzig's inner city ring directly north of the New Town Hall on Burgplatz.
Already during the construction of the New City Hall, there were plans to increase the number of rooms by an attached extension. Thus, between 1908 and 1912, a so-called "Stadthaus" was built in a similar but sober design according to the plans of the Leipzig city architect Hugo Licht, who had also built the neighboring New City Hall. Both buildings are separated by Lotterstraße, across which they are connected by a two-story bridge structure.
The seven-story townhouse with its irregular five-sided floor plan occupies the area of Burgplatz 1, Martin-Luther-Ring 8-8a and Markgrafenstraße 3 with a total area of 7,695 m². It features more than 300 rooms, including the Leipzig registry office. The large and small wedding halls have been in use since 1911. These rooms have a separate representative entrance from the Martin-Luther-Ring. In addition, the two wood-paneled marriage rooms are particularly artistically decorated, and in the hallway in front of them is a wall fountain made of polished Jura marble with a decorated tile covering.
The townhouse was heavily damaged by bombs on April 16/17, 1945, and the building of the haberdashery wholesaler Berger & Voigt, which was directly adjacent in the northwest corner, was completely destroyed. An eleven-story office and commercial building named Trias was built here and completed in June 2014.
