Tierpark Weißwasser, Weißwasser
Facts and practical information
Tierpark Weißwasser is an animal park in the East Saxon city of Weißwasser/Oberlausitz near the city center, immediately north of the Jahnteich pond in Jahnpark.
Founded in 1966 as an initiative of citizens, businesses and institutions of the city, it houses more than 75 species and breeds from Europe, Asia, Africa and South America, among others, on an area of 6.5 hectares. The zoo participates in the European Conservation Breeding Program and is home to a pair of the endangered balistar. Its breeding has so far been unsuccessful.
Partially walk-in enclosures and facilities allow direct and up-close contact with some of these species.
In the mid-1990s, numerous enclosures and facilities were repaired, modernized or completely rebuilt.
At the beginning of 2003, the zoo in Weißwasser was privatized. Since the 40th anniversary of the zoo in the summer of 2006, the zoo has its own life-size mascot, Hedwig the owl, which is also visible in the zoo logo.
