Maxkirche, Düsseldorf
Facts and practical information
The Catholic Church of St. Maximilian, today usually called Maxkirche, in the Carlstadt district of Düsseldorf, is a late Baroque church that grew out of a Franciscan monastery that was dissolved in 1804. The monastery, whose living quarters and service rooms were located in the immediately adjacent Maxhaus, was founded in the 17th century, and the present church was built in the 18th century.
The bronze eagle lectern from 1449 was originally created for Altenberg Cathedral. The choir stalls come from the predecessor church from the 17th century. The 14 oil paintings on the side walls form a Stations of the Cross and are by the Nazarene church painter Heinrich Nüttgens, who created them in 1903. The adjacent former monastery building, "Maxhaus, Catholic Town House," now houses a restaurant, among other things.
