Kozlowski-Denkmal, Magdeburg
Facts and practical information
The Kozlowski Monument is a monument erected in honor of Theodor Kozlowski in Magdeburg. The monument, designed as an obelisk, is located on the eastern bank of the Stromelbe on the street Kleiner Werder in Magdeburg's Werder district.
It commemorates the civil engineer and Prussian construction official Theodor Kozlowski, who was active as Elbstrombaudirektor from 1866 to 1880 and who was instrumental in regulating the Elbe, which until then had been largely free-flowing. The monument was donated by the Elbe boatmen in gratitude for Kozlowski's work during his lifetime. From an ecological point of view, the extensive regulation measures of the free-flowing river are seen much more critically today.
The monument was designed in 1900 by the architects Poetsch and Eggemann and unveiled in 1900. On a high pedestal of dark syenite stands a postament of brown-red Miltenberg sandstone tapering towards the top, which in turn supports an obelisk of polished Saxon granite. On the front of the pedestal is a bronze plaque with a relief portrait of Kozlowski, modeled by the sculptor Richard Ohmann and executed by the Lauchhammer foundry.
On the pedestal there is an inscription with the text: TO THE FIRST ELBSTROM-BAUDIRECTOR SECRET OBER-BAURATH THEODOR KOZLOWSKI THE GRATEFUL ELBE NAVIGATION
Underneath are the dates 1866 and 1880, the years of the beginning and end of Kozlowski's term.
