Skulpturengarten, Bremen

The Sculpture Garden of the Parliament is located in Bremen in the Mitte district on Bremen's Marktplatz to the right of the House of Parliament. It can be visited during the opening hours of the Bremen Parliament.

Although the sculpture garden is located directly on the market square, it is a quiet place to linger and contemplate the expressive figures of Gerhard Marcks. The bronze sculptures were created between 1960 and 1969. Marcks created the five figures Prima Vera, Schreitender Jüngling, Schreitendes Mädchen, Getroffener and Verwundeter Achill in bronze as well as the Dryade in stone. In 2005, the sculptures were opened to the public next to the citizenry.

Prima Vera was a 1917 German silent film melodrama in which a young woman falls in love with a painter named Melchior, whom she sits as a model for an altarpiece. After much turmoil, they both flee to Italy; however, Melchior dumps her one day.

Achill or Achilles was an invulnerable hero of the Achaeans in Greek mythology, who was nevertheless wounded and died in the Trojan War according to Homer's Iliad.

Dryads are tree spirits in Greek mythology, nymphs who lived on oak trees for tree, oak. They were imagined as beautiful female beings.

Marcks was one of the most important German sculptors of the 20th century. In Bremen, further works by him are on loan, among others, in the Gerhard-Marcks-Haus next to the Kunsthalle near the Wallanlagen and in the Haus der Bürgerschaft. In public space, the Bremen Town Musicians are located at Bremen City Hall, the reclining Aegina since 1968 in the Wallanlagen, The Caller since 2007 in front of Radio Bremen, Hinter der Mauer 7 and Prophet and Genius in the garden of Villa Ichon in the Ostertorviertel.
