The Bunker Museum is an underground complex of buildings in the Thuringian Forest near the Ilmenau district of Allzunah in the Ilm district.
Today's bunker is a furnished, 3600 m² leadership bunker from the Cold War period. It was covered and built under the direction of the Ministry of State Security. Its intended purpose: use as a facility of the MfS, In case of war, alternative command post of the Chairman of the District Operations Command Suhl with the closest command staff. Comparable military installations were built in all GDR districts and, with the exception of one bunker in Machern near Leipzig, have since been destroyed. The bunker museum was opened in 2004 and is privately owned. The museum concept includes guided tours of the facility as well as overnight stays in the bunker, which are offered as "time travel" and living history lessons.
