Museum für Druckkunst, Leipzig
Facts and practical information
The Museum für Druckkunst Leipzig of the traditional book and publishing city is a museum documenting older techniques of printing. It is located on Nonnenstraße in the Leipzig district of Plagwitz.
What is special about the museum is the way in which the collection is presented: the printing presses and presses are not presented as mute witnesses of their time, but give a practical demonstration of the working methods in a lively form. Visitors can be introduced to the secrets of the black art by letterpress printers, typesetters and a type founder. The museum is also a hands-on printing workshop, making it ideal for courses and workshops, and is particularly popular with artists. The museum has made a name for itself nationwide with events such as the Leipzig Typo Days, special exhibitions with partners from all over Germany, Israel, Switzerland, France or most recently Finland, as well as international artists' workshops.
The collection includes the type foundry, a workshop for wood engraving, a typesetting workshop with the presentation of the oldest process, lead typesetting, printing presses and machines, a fully equipped bookbinding workshop and much about typefaces and typography. The collection includes, among other things, one of the last collotype printing houses in the world. The museum hosts special exhibitions, events and workshops.
