The Red House is located in Dietrichstraße on the market square in Trier. The house was built in 1684 by the master builder Wolfgang Stuppeler for the cathedral secretary Johann Wilhelm Polch. After being destroyed during World War II on December 21, 1944, the house was rebuilt between 1968 and 1970. At present there is a café in the house. On the front of the house there is an inscription: ANTE ROMAM TREVIRIS STETIT ANNIS MILLE TRECENTIS.PERSTET ET ÆTERNA PACE FRVATVR. AMEN.This means: Rather than Rome, Trier stood one thousand and three hundred years.May it continue to exist and enjoy eternal peace.These lines refer to the legendary founding of the city of Trier by Trebeta, a legendary Assyrian prince, first recorded in 1105.
At times, the Steipe next door was also referred to as the "Red House".
