The public library in Lüdenscheid, or rather its predecessor, the "Volksbibliothek der Stadt Lüdenscheid", was opened on May 10, 1857, and was one of the older libraries in Germany with this designation and the claim to be open to all classes of the population. The public library itself is located in the eastern part of downtown Lüdenscheid, not far from the Wilhelmstraße shopping area and the town hall.
