Torwache, Kassel
Facts and practical information
The gatehouse is located on Brüder-Grimm-Platz in Kassel and consists of two buildings facing each other on Wilhelmshöher Allee. The buildings are part of an unfinished gateway complex designed in 1805 by architect Heinrich Christoph Jussow, who was also involved in the construction of Wilhelmshöhe Palace and Löwenburg Castle.
The southern building housed the collection of the Kupferstichkabinett from 1931 to 1939. It now belongs to the Hessisches Landesmuseum. The northern building was the residence of the Brothers Grimm between 1814 and 1822 and is part of the building complex of the Hessian Administrative Court.
During Documenta 14, both buildings were covered with used jute sacks sewn together, an action by the Ghanaian artist Ibrahim Mahama. In addition, the southern part housed works by other artists.
