Herrenburg, Essen
Facts and practical information
The Herrenburg is a departed Carolingian ring fort south of Essen-Werden on the left side of the Ruhr on the Pastoratsberg.
It is an oval-shaped complex, 150 m by 100 m in diameter, with remains of masonry made of quarry stones and a series of ramparts. Finds dating from the 9th to 11th centuries indicate that the castle complex was built in the early Middle Ages. The hill is named after the medieval rectory of St. Clement, which later stood in the middle of the ramparts. Further to the south is the Alteburg.
