Powder Tower, Jena
Facts and practical information
The Powder Tower is a part of the old city wall of Jena.
Around 1300, Jena's city fortifications had reached the point where one could speak of a closed system. It consisted of ditches, walls, kennel areas, 3 gate towers, 4 corner bastions and 12 subsequently inserted shell towers. The powder tower on the northwest corner of the city wall is about 20 meters high and has 4 floors with a walkway. Together with the reconstructed battlements, the house on the wall and the Johannistor, this is the largest surviving part of Jena's former city fortifications.
The tower has only one access, a low gate at a height of about 7 meters. This gate can be reached via the reconstructed battlements. The old trade route from Erfurt to Altenburg led through the nearby Johannistor. One of four suburbs of medieval Jena, Johannisvorstadt, was located in front of the ensemble.
