Burg Tharandt
Facts and practical information
Tharandt Castle-a castle located in Tharandt near Freital in the Sächsische Schweiz-Osherzgebirge poviat, currently in a state of ruins. Its history dates back to the beginning of the 13th century.
The first owner of the castle was Dytryk and depressed, the margrave of Miles. The building was modeled on the Tarantsberg Tyrolean castle. After the death of Dytryk, the castle was taken over by Louis IV Landgraf. In 1224 the building burned down during the assault. It was rebuilt by Henry III of the dignified, son of Dytryk. In 1316, the castle was the Brandenburg margrave Waldemar the Great and Jan von Brandenburg. Between 1371 and 1400 he belonged to Count Schönburg. Then the fortifications were strengthened. In 1410 Tharandt was awarded to Landgraf Fryderyk younger.
At the end of the 15th century, Sydonia, daughter of Jerzy of Podiebradów, lived in the castle. After her death in 1510, he remained uninhabited. In 1572, the roof was dismantled and used to repair the castle in Annaburg. In 1582, after the permission obtained from Augustine, the building was demolished. Between 1626-31 the church standing still to this day in the former Podzamcze.
In 1800, ruins were planted with trees and flowers, giving them a romantic look. Between 1790 and 1850 they were a favorite object for painters and cartoonists, among which were Ludwig Richter, Caspar David Friedrich, Adrian Zingg and Carl Blechen.
Next to the preserved ruins between 1858 and 1861, Ariel Graf von der Recke-Volmerstein built a new castle. In 1866, Michał Hieronim Leszczyc-Sumiński bought the property from him and rebuilt it in an oriental-Muritanian style. After the death of Sumiński in 1898, the castle inherited his stepson, Baron von Recum. One of the later owners was Alchemist Franz Tausend. From the fire in 1936 to 2002, the castle's ruins remained almost unchanged. From 2002, the castle is in private hands and is slowly restored.
