Röttler Kirche, Lörrach
Facts and practical information
The church of Rötteln was very probably dedicated to St. Gallus. The Protestant congregations of Haagen and Tumringen, which from the beginning belonged to the parish of Rötteln together with the hamlet of Rötteln, hold services there for their approximately 3000 faithful. With the first mention in 751 and the new construction in 1401, it is the oldest church in Lörrach and Rötteln the oldest church village in the Vorderes Wiesental. In the church there is a burial chapel of Margrave Rudolf III and his wife Anna. The painted grave slabs are among the most important stone sculptures in southwest Germany and the best preserved evidence of late Gothic funerary art. In 1556 and in the following years, the Röttl church was the site of several synods for the introduction of the Reformation in the Markgräflerland and thus the spiritual center, which is why it has a special historical significance.
