Stadtbibliothek Göttingen, Göttingen
Facts and practical information
With approximately 190,000 media - in addition to books including DVDs, CD-ROMs, city maps, sheet music, audio books and games - the Göttingen City Library forms a center for information transfer and entertainment. An online catalog informs about the current media offer.
Internet workstations, office PCs, CD-ROMs and games PCs, Internet training courses, guided tours of the library, special offers for kindergartens and schools, and an extensive calendar of events round out the library's offerings. The library's event activities focus on the Schoss children's program, reading aloud for children and adults, as well as activities for senior citizens and cooperation with schools.
In addition to an extensive collection for adults, the central library offers a separate children's library as well as a youth area and a parents' area. The library system also includes branches in the districts of Elliehausen, Geismar, Grone, Nikolausberg, Roringen and Weende. As a branch on the Internet, the "Onleihe" provides media for download.
On April 8, 2008, the former Stadthaus, home of the Göttingen City Library, was named after the international law expert Thomas Buergenthal. In Göttingen, the US-American lawyer of German-Jewish origin had once found his mother again after having survived two ghettos, the Auschwitz concentration camp and the so-called death march to Sachsenhausen as a child.
Since October 2009, users of the central library have been able to check out their media at three self-checkout terminals. Since February 2010, the municipal library has been entitled "Library with Quality and Seal", which it was awarded for a period of three years under the certification program for public libraries in Lower Saxony.
