Facts and practical information
The Pre- and Early History Museum Thalmässing is an archaeological museum in the Middle Franconian market Thalmässing in the district of Roth. The museum displays finds from the Stone, Bronze and Iron Ages to the time of the Migration Period. The main focus of the museum is the presentation of the regional development history.
The museum, which is supported by the district of Roth, was founded in 1983 and housed in a building that was originally erected in 1828 as a granary, but was later used as a town hall. The permanent exhibition housed on the second floor was designed in cooperation with the Nuremberg Natural History Society. The first floor is available for special exhibitions and museum educational activities on working reconstructions. Among the showpieces of the exhibition were a nearly 4,000-year-old stool grave of a man from the Corded Ware Culture and an elaborate reconstruction of a Hallstatt-period burial chamber complete with grave goods of a Celtic lady, which was completely excavated and researched in Landersdorf from 1983 to 1986. The most recent finds date back to the 6th and 7th century A.D. when the tribe of the Bavarians settled in Thalmässing and established a burial ground.
An attached archaeological trail leads to sites on the nearby Jurassic rim.
