Roland of Gardelegen is a landmark of the Hanseatic town of Gardelegen. He is a statue of a knight with a sword. Roland statues have been a symbol of a town's independence in many towns in northern and eastern Germany since the Middle Ages, when it gained its own market rights and jurisdiction. It was generally regarded as a sign of civic pride and the achievement of craftsmen and merchants.
