Felsenbad, Pottenstein
Facts and practical information
Felsenbad Pottenstein in Pottenstein is an outdoor swimming pool opened in 1926 and was already considered one of the most beautiful outdoor swimming facilities in Germany in its original form.
When it opened at Whitsun 1926, the bath had a 1300 square meter swimming pool and a diving facility with four, seven and ten meters built into the 70 meter high Finkenstein.
A renovation of the badly damaged pool in the 1970s failed due to the high costs. The Kurhaus in Pottenstein received an indoor swimming pool in 1972. This was extended in 1995 to become the Juramar adventure pool. In 1987 came the temporary end for the Felsenbad, until it was reopened after a restoration phase at Whitsun 2001. During the reconstruction, the concrete pool was replaced by a natural bathing pond. The purification of the water takes place in a planted filter basin filled with filter substrate. The purified water at the bottom of the pool is pumped back into the bathing pool through a drainage pipe. This method eliminates the need for chemicals.
The bath is located about 500 meters outside Pottenstein opposite the Schöngrundsee, the summer toboggan run and the Devil's Cave.
The ruins of the baths were also used as a film set in 1994. The music video Love so Beautiful by Bamberg dancefloor artist General B. Power's was filmed there.
The Art Nouveau open-air swimming pool in front of the rocky backdrop has become a natural swimming pool with a lake stage, beer garden and café terrace.
