Swiss Bobsleigh Run, Europa Park
Facts and practical information
The Swiss Bobsled Ride at Europa-Park in Rust is a steel roller coaster of the bobsled type made by Mack Rides. It is located in the Swiss themed area of the park.
The roller coaster was opened in 1985 and was the prototype of this type of manufacturer. Unlike other roller coasters, bobsled rides largely do not run on rails, but in a channel made of steel tubes, similar in shape to an ice channel. The ride feeling is therefore also different, the trains swing out to the side more or less in the curves depending on the load, which creates a distinct lurching sensation. However, due to the length and multi-unit nature of the train, this is less noticeable than on similar layouts from other manufacturers that use single-link cars. Only in the brakes and the station is the train guided on rails. Special elements are placed in front of these sections of track for threading.
The railroad runs around and over a faithful replica of the Swiss mountain village of Chandolin, which, however, was built a few years after the railroad. To do this, the last helix of the track had to be moved and another curve added to the track.
The Swiss bobsleigh track has five trains, each with six cars, but only a maximum of four trains can be used in regular operation. Each car can seat two people in a row. The cars are designed like bobsleds from the sport of bobsledding, with each train having a different color and carrying flags of a different nation.
The following trains exist: "Switzerland", "Suisse", "Germany", "Italia", "France"
A chain lift is used as the propulsion system, which transports the trains up the 20-meter-high lifthill. In order to achieve the maximum capacity of 1220 passengers per hour, several trains can always travel along the line at the same time, secured by a block system with block brakes. Classic shoe brakes are used as brakes.
