Delitzscher Schloss, Delitzsch

Delitzsch Baroque Castle is located in the northern Saxon town of Delitzsch and is one of the oldest castles in northwestern Saxony. The building and adjacent garden area are integrated into the planned historic district, where a main street runs south of the castle grounds. Consisting of a manor house, a small adjacent wing to the northwest and a larger adjacent wing to the northeast, it was built and architecturally altered in several construction phases. Only the foundations of the original building from the early 12th century remain. Among the oldest surviving components are two deep cellars and the tower, which were built by the Margrave of Meissen, Wilhelm I, starting in 1389.

Built on the foundations of a Gothic moated castle, the complex served the Wettins as an administrative and travel residence from 1387 to 1540. Subsequently, the Saxon electors had the castle rebuilt into a Renaissance palace from 1540 to 1558 and inhabited it during their travels. At the end of the 17th century, the exterior of the complex was changed for the last time, giving it its Baroque appearance. From then on, the principality of Saxe-Merseburg used it as a widow's and traveler's residence.

After restoration in stages starting in 1993, the baroque castle of Delitzsch is now used as a museum, tourist information, registry office, branch of the district music school "Heinrich Schütz" North Saxony, sound vault and supra-regional event venue. The cultural monument is owned by the Großer Kreisstadt Delitzsch.
