Schloß Ruhetal
Facts and practical information
Ruhetal Castle is a castle in Saxony in the north of the town of Mügeln.
It was built in the year 1150 in the Döllnitz valley together with a chapel and was a former bishop's seat of the bishopric of Meissen. In the place where the castle stands today, a moated castle once stood. Meissen bishops carried out further reconstructions in 1261 and 1341. The mighty 40-meter-high tower, which was built in 1380 under Bishop Nicholas I, is characteristic for the view of Ruhetal Castle.
The castle was the retirement residence of Bishop Johann IX von Haugwitz around 1590. Later it was used as the seat of the Mügeln Justice Office, Mügeln Court Office and Mügeln District Court. It is under monument protection. Today, the Free State of Saxony is the owner. A sponsoring association from Mügeln develops utilization concepts and takes care of the preservation of the castle.
