Facts and practical information
The Church of the name Jesus in Bonn - since 2011, the main temple of the Old Catholic church in Germany, located in Bonn in North Rhine -Westphalia. The temple received the call of "Name of Jesus" in 1721 on the initiative of Pope Innocent IX.
The church was built in 1594 as a temple of the Jesuit college. After the Jesuit departure from the city in 1774, the building stood empty. For almost a hundred years it was used, among others as stables of horse troops and place of accommodation of soldiers. In 1877, an Old Catholic parish was arranged in the church, it used the temple until 1934. In 1935, the temple became a Roman Catholic rector's church at the University of Bonn. In 2007, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cologne liquidated the academic rector and handed over the temple to the Old Catholic Church in Germany, it is expected that in 2011 the church will be reconciled and the new cathedral of the Old Catholic Church in Germany would be established. To this day, the church of St. Cyprian, however, this is a makeshift and temporary solution.
The church was built on the basis of plans of Jakob de Candrea in the style of the so -called Jesuit Gothic, mixed with elements of other styles. It has two towers, with characteristic double Romanesque windows, only Gothic windows can be found in the bottom of the church. Above the main entrance there are Latin inscriptions informing about the date of consecration, and the monogram of Christ IHS. The church has the character of an indoor church, with a vast crypt, in which the bodies of about 65 Jesuits rest. The characteristic high altar was designed by Bartłomiej Dierix in 1755. The side altars come from the local Capuchin church demolished in 1897.
The church belongs to the parish Saint. Cyprian in Bonn. The parish also belongs to the church of St. Cyprian in Bonn - currently acting as the main temple of the church, because in the Church of the name Jesus a general adaptation renovation is underway. The parish priest is Fr. Werner Luttermann. Bonn is the seat of the bishop of the Old Catholic Church in Germany - Joachim Vobbe.
