Am roten Steine is a nature reserve in the city of Hildesheim, Lower Saxony.
The nature reserve with the registration number NSG HA 109 is about 30 hectares in size. Since 2006, most of it has been part of the FFH area "Beuster ". The area has been under nature protection since August 14, 1986. As of January 12, 2017, the nature reserve was extended to include the course of the Beuster River, which flows into the Innerste River in the nature reserve, as far as the city boundary on Federal Highway 243. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the city of Hildesheim.
The nature reserve is located in the south of the city of Hildesheim in the Innerste floodplain between the districts of Ochtersum and Itzum. It protects a section of the floodplain and a steep slope on the northeastern bank of the Innerste River as well as the lowest section of the Beuster River. The floodplain is largely used as grassland. In the north of the nature reserve there is a remnant of a softwood floodplain dominated by willows. The slope on the northeastern bank of the Innerste is characterized by semi-arid grassland, partially overgrown with shrubs. In the area of the slope spring wet areas can be found. The Beuster is the habitat of brook lamprey and bullhead, among others.
In the south, the nature reserve is bordered by the district road 302, in the southwest by the federal road 243 and in the north by the railroad line Hildesheim-Goslar.
A nature discovery trail about six kilometers long with several display boards runs through the area.
