Golfclub Bergisch Land, Wuppertal
Facts and practical information
The Golfclub Bergisch Land Wuppertal e.V. in Wuppertal with its golf course is one of the older German golf clubs.
Willy Schniewind, later president of the German Golf Association, initiated the founding of the association in 1928. Ten factory owners had met for this purpose at the Barmer Gesellschaft Concordia.
The renowned English golf course builder John Stanton Fleming Morrison planned the first nine-hole course. This was built on the site of the Hof zur Mühlen farm belonging to the long-established Schniewind family in the Siebeneick neighborhood in the north of Elberfeld in what is now the Uellendahl-Katernberg district. Morrison also carried out the first expansion to 13 lanes in 1958. Five years later, the hardly less well-known Bernhard von Limburger was responsible for the third expansion stage to 18 holes.
The par-72 course is situated in park-like strongly hilly terrain; the often hanging holes and greens, defused in 2007/2008, make it particularly challenging.
One member of the club was the former professional golfer Katharina Schallenberg, but the most prominent member is probably Martin Kaymer, who lives in neighboring Mettmann and used to compete for the Bundesliga club.
