Museum am Dom, Würzburg
Facts and practical information
The Museum am Dom is an art museum of the Diocese of Würzburg opened in March 2003 under Bishop Paul-Werner Scheele.
The works of art in the entrance hall refer to the basic human situation between fall and rise, light and darkness, hope and despair, joy and sorrow, heaven and earth. The permanent exhibition includes about 300 paintings and sculptures from the 10th to the 21st century. Modern and contemporary artists are directly juxtaposed with the treatment of themes by old masters.
The building extends over a total of four floors of the Kilianshaus, which was completely renovated and converted from 2001 to 2003. It is located on Kiliansplatz between Würzburg Cathedral and Neumünster in Würzburg.
On the square between the cathedral and Neumünster there used to be the Leichhof, which was used until about the middle of the 16th century as the cathedral cemetery for the dead of the cathedral parish of St. Kilian and the houses belonging to Neumünster. Also between the cathedral and Neumünster was a Salhof, whose well shaft was converted into a latrine in the 13th century. A number of objects were found in this waste pit that provide information about everyday life in the Middle Ages.
