Triton-Brunnen, Düsseldorf
Facts and practical information
The Triton Fountain was created by Düsseldorf sculptor Friedrich Coubillier from 1898 to 1902 and acquired by the Stadtverschönerungsverein for Düsseldorf's Königsallee. At the northern end of the avenue, the fountain functions as a point de vue and a creative conclusion to the canal axis of the Stadtgraben.
Seen from Corneliusplatz, the fountain resembles a bridge with stone balustrade, decorative vases and putti. The actual fountain is located in the center below a projecting platform with stone benches. The fountain figure of the Greek sea god Triton, armed with a lance, holds back an enormous water-spouting fish, which is fought off to the side by two small, naked water children. The group of figures rests on artificial rocks and is surrounded on the sides by shells with water-spouting lion heads.
The Tritonenbrunnen is part of the Königsallee complex with moat and gardens, which has been a listed monument since 1994.
