Hruby Regiel, Tatra National Park
Facts and practical information
Hruby Regiel - a fairly prominent alpine peak in the Western Tatras, with an altitude of 1339 m. It rises between the Valley of the Small Meadow and the Stanky Gully. It is separated from the Czerwone Wierchy massif by the deeply cut Przysłop Miętusi, while from the Czerwone Gronik by the unexplored Wyżnie Stanikowe Siodło. Its base has an area of about 1.5 km². It is one of the lowest peaks, which belong to the Crown of the Tatras, and among the massifs it takes 7th place in terms of height.
It is built of sedimentary rocks, mainly sandstones and conglomerates and also numulitic limestone. However, these sediments do not belong to the conglomerate mantle, but to the Podhale series from the Eocene epoch. It is almost completely forested. Before the area was included in TPN, as a result of inappropriate forest management its slopes formed bare troughs conducive to erosion.
The name of the peak comes from its shape. On its southern side there is an overgrowing Jaworzynka Miętusia glade located on the ridge connecting it with the neighboring Mały Regl. As far as rare in Poland plants are concerned, the following species were found on Hruby Regl: trifoliate bulrush, common cotoneaster, small-flowered orchid, leafless orchid, and bearberry.
