Mały Kozi Wierch, Tatra National Park
Facts and practical information
Mały Kozi Wierch is a peak in the long eastern ridge of Świnica in the High Tatras, on the route of Orla Perć. In the west it borders with Zawratowa Turnia, from which it is separated by Zawrat, while in the east it is separated from Zmarzłych Czub by Zmarzła Switchka Wyżnia. The most commonly given height of Mt Mały Kozie Wierch is 2226 m, in some sources 2228 m.
Mały Kozi Wierch is a vast massif with three peaks. In the direction of the Valley of Five Polish Lakes runs the third ridge, separating the Dolinka pod Kolem from Dolinka Pustej. In it there is a peak called Kolowa Czuba, separated from the summit of Mt Mały Kozie Wierch by the Stairway Pass. The northern slopes of the Small Goat Peak descend with the wall to the Malarzły Staw Gąsienicowy.
In the eastern ridge of Mt Mały Kozie Wierch there are two broad crags - Zmarzłe Czuby descending toward Dolinka Pustej with steep walls. From the main top they are separated by a narrow Marzarzła Przysczka Wyżnia, from which to the north descends the deep żleb Honoratka, formerly called the Żydowski Żlebem and still today marked as such on some maps. Both names have unclear origins, the older one may derive from a Jewish tourist, Kurt Langfeldes, who died in this place in 1925.
The view from Maly Kozie Wierch is wide, more interesting than from Zawrat. Since 1876 the panorama was recommended in his guidebooks by Karl Kolbenheyer.
The first recorded tourist ascents: in summer - probably Karl Kolbenheyer, August 24, 1875 for sure Janusz Chmielowski and Jakub Gąsienica Szustek, July 10, 1892 in winter - Jozef Lesiecki, Leon Loria, Mariusz Zaruski and Stanislaw Zdyb, April 1, 1911.
The name of Small Kozie Wierch comes from the early years of the twentieth century, but until 1903 it meant Zamarłą Turię. In 1905 Orla Perć was led through the peak. Until 2012 there were 6 fatal accidents on Mały Kozi Wierch.
