Casona de El Carmen
Facts and practical information
The Palace of Rugama with its chapel is located in the district of La Bodega in the town of Bárcena de Cicero in the municipality of the same name. It was ordered to be built in 1740 by Lorenzo de Rugama who was administrator of the Acapulco and Master of the ship "Nuestra Señora de los Dolores" as well as deputy in the Courts of Manila in 1731. He was also sergeant major of the cavalry of Azoques. He died without direct descendants so the entailed estate passed to a niece and her husband.
This set of palace plus chapel was declared of Cultural Interest in 1983, with the category of monument. It is inhabited, especially in the summer months, and the property is used for agricultural exploitation. It is privately owned by the descendants of Rufina Cardeñosa.
