Hugh's Room was established in April 2001, named in honor of Hugh Carson, brother of the founder Richard Carson, who was an avid supporter of folk music until his untimely passing.

The venue quickly garnered a reputation as one of Toronto's premier listening rooms, attracting a diverse array of musicians from across Canada and around the world. With a capacity of around 200 seats, Hugh's Room provided a cozy and personal experience, allowing the audience to connect deeply with the artists and their music.

The club's design was thoughtfully curated to enhance the live music experience. The stage was set against a backdrop of warm, wooden tones, and the seating was arranged to ensure every guest had a clear view of the performers. The sound quality at Hugh's Room was often praised, making it a favorite spot for live recordings.

In January 2017, the venue closed due to financial difficulties but was later reopened thanks to the support of the community and a group of dedicated volunteers who formed the non-profit organization, Hugh's Room Live. Their efforts ensured that the legacy of Hugh's Room continued, preserving its role as a space where artists and audiences could come together in celebration of music and community.

Hugh's Room operated as a not-for-profit entity and relied on the support of its patrons and the dedication of volunteers. It hosted a wide range of events, from album release concerts and artist tributes to community gatherings and private functions.

Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic brought new challenges, and in 2020, Hugh's Room Live announced that it would not be reopening its original location. The organization continued to search for a new home, hoping to revive the beloved venue in a new space where it could continue to support and showcase the incredible talent of the folk and roots music scene.
