Schwedenturm, Konstanz
Facts and practical information
The Schwedenturm is located on the southwest side of Mainau Island, near the wine trail and the arboretum.
"1558" is written above the entrance to the tower. This suggests that the slender Swedish tower was built in the 16th century as a watchtower facing the mainland. However, the pyramid roof and the wooden cladding date from the 19th century. The coat of arms of the Teutonic Order and Commander Georg von Gemmingen can also be found on the tower. During the Thirty Years' War, Swedish troops occupied the island and looted everything except for a cross.
Although built much earlier, the name Swedish Tower is based on the two-year period of occupation by the Swedish troops from 1647 to 1649. The building is currently not open to visitors.
