Schlange, Ludwigsburg
Facts and practical information
The Snake over Crossing is an art installation by Dutch artist Auke de Vries in Ludwigsburg.
On the occasion of the art project Platzverführung de Vries created the art object from plastic and steel. The height of the sculpture is 21 meters, the length of the snake about 12 meters with a weight of 180 kg. Mounted in 1992 above the intersection of Wilhelmstrasse and Schlossstrasse, known as the Sternkreuzung, the house with branches and snake rests on an angled support. The sculpture was purchased by the Badische Landesbank for 250,000 DM and donated to the city of Ludwigsburg.
The restrictions on traffic associated with the installation by closing a turn lane caused controversy.
After some initial controversy, the sculpture has now become part of Ludwigsburg's cityscape and was restored by the builder in 2006. Alke Hollwedel, director of the Ludwigsburg Museum sees the sculpture as one of the city's landmarks.
