Landesdenkmal für die Befreiungskrieger, Rostock
Facts and practical information
The State Monument to the War of Liberation 1813-1815 is a monument located at Franz-Parr-Platz in Güstrow. It was built in 1863-1865 according to a design by the architect and Schwerin court architect Hermann Willebrand. The sculptural work was done by Georg Wiese, probably based on designs by Albert Wolff. It was financed by an initiative of Güstrow citizens and by a collection of money among participants and members of the wars of liberation in preparation for the 50th anniversary. The foundation stone was laid on March 27, 1863, and the monument was unveiled on July 12, 1865.
Due to acute danger of collapse, Germany's second largest cast iron monument at the time underwent extensive restoration starting in April 1987, and it was only after more than seven years that the work was completed on October 8, 1994. The restoration was carried out by Wolfgang Gummelt from Berlin and Wolfgang Ziesemer from Güstrower Denkmalpflege GmbH.
