Museum am Meer, Büsum
Facts and practical information
The Museum am Meer in Büsum provides information about the history of crab fishing and processing in the North Sea and about the history of tourism in Büsum.
The museum is located directly at the harbor basin II in Büsum and in the same building as the Büsumer Fischereigesellschaft, whose premises can be viewed through windows from the museum. Depending on the time of day, the visitor can follow the bringing in and processing of the crabs and, for example, observe a crab screening plant in operation.
Shrimp fishing and mudflat surveying are presented in two films; the wheelhouse of a crab cutter is available for a sailing simulation and other interactive elements are also represented in the exhibition.
The 1920 cutter Leonore Johanna, which is located outside the museum, can be viewed through cuts in the hull.
The history of tourism in Büsum and the history of the place itself are presented in films, slide shows and installations.
The museum was partly funded by the European Union.
