Justizvollzugsanstalt Bruchsal - Außenstelle Kislau, Bad Schönborn
Facts and practical information
Kislau Castle is located in the Bad Mingolsheim district in the municipality of Bad Schönborn in the Karlsruhe district, on the Heidelberg-Karlsruhe Rhine Valley railroad. Today it is used as a correctional facility.
The name Kislau comes from the old word Kislowe, which means "pebbly floodplain". It thus describes the geographical location in the Bruhrain, the transitional area between Kraichgau and Hardtwald, which extends from Bruchsal to Wiesloch. In older documents, the spelling "Kißlau" or "Kieslau" can also be found.
Historically, Kislau is the medieval lordship of the same name together with the associated castle. The origins of the site probably date back to the 11th century, as the first news about the Lords of Kislau, whose dominion also included the surrounding villages of Mingolsheim, Langenbrücken and Kronau, date from this time.
