Färberturm, Gunzenhausen
Facts and practical information
The Färberturm is part of the medieval city fortifications of the town of Gunzenhausen in the Middle Franconian district of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen. The building is registered as a monument in the Bavarian monument list under the monument number D-5-77-136-1. The tower is located at the street corner Weißenburger Straße/Kirchenstraße with the address Weißenburger Straße 13. It stands near the Weißenburger Tor, which was demolished in the middle of the 19th century.
Like the rest of the city fortifications, the round tower dates back to the 14th century; the monument list entry for the Weißenburger Straße ensemble, however, mentions the 15th century. The building was used both as a powder tower and as a prison, which explains the epithet of the Färberturm. The current name comes from a former dyeing factory, which was located not far from the structure. The tower is made of humped ashlars.
