Evangelical Church, Velbert
Facts and practical information
The Evangelische Kirche Tönisheide is a church in the Velbert district of Tönisheide in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.
It was donated by Gerhard II of Berg and was originally dedicated to Anthony the Great, one of the Four Marshals of God, whom Gerhard particularly venerated. It was first mentioned as St. Anthony's Chapel in 1448. The name of today's Tönisheide district is derived from this chapel. After the arrival of the Reformation in Hardenberg, the chapel was given to the Protestant pastor of Neviges in 1626.
The building has a main choir, to which a chapel choir was added on the north side around 1700. The entrance hall and the sacristy were created only during the restoration between 1971 and 1974.
The parish of Tönisheide received its independence in 1892. In the same year, a cemetery was consecrated for the parish on a nearby site, which exists unchanged to this day. Later, a parish hall was added opposite the church.
