The castle ob Ellwangen served from 1460 as a residence and seat of power for the prince princes of the Ellwangen prince provostry and from 1802/1803 to 1842 as an electoral or royal residence. It was originally built around 1200 as a fortified castle for the monastery of Ellwangen, which at that time was already independent of the empire.
The extensive complex is located at about 505 meters above sea level on a hill above the city center of Ellwangen in eastern Württemberg in the midst of meadow orchards. Together with the Schönenberg Church, the castle forms a landmark of Ellwangen that is visible from afar.
