Facts and practical information
The elevated bunker on the site of the WERKStadt shopping center in Limburg, is an air raid shelter of the Winkel design, named after the designer Leo Winkel. It was built during World War II in 1941 to protect the employees of the Reichsbahn repair works in Limburg from Allied air raids. To improve vibration protection, the bunker was built on a bed of iron filings.
The bunker, which still has large parts of the furnishings of its time, such as the wooden benches on which the shelter seekers sat, is now a listed building.
