Church of the Resurrection, Düsseldorf
Facts and practical information
The Protestant Church of the Resurrection in Düsseldorf-Oberkassel, on the corner site of Arnulfstraße/Quirinstraße, is an important testimony of Art Nouveau in architectural history, pointing ahead to the Rhenish brick architecture of the 1920s. It is listed as a historical monument. It was built between 1913 and 1914 to a design by Düsseldorf architects Rudolf Wilhelm Verheyen and Julius Stobbe and inaugurated on Ascension Day 1914.
The church, rectory, parish hall and administration building are combined into a structural ensemble of unrendered brick with natural stone elements under green-glazed tiled roofs - a novelty for the time. The church, a hall building with galleries, presents itself with a high baroque volute gable with art nouveau ornaments and a protruding octagonal tower with a wind gallery. Traditionally, on Christmas Eve at midnight there is a tower blowing.
