The German Unity Memorial, also called the "Divided Germany" memorial, as well as the "Memorial of the German East" after its inauguration and before reunification, was dedicated on June 16, 1961, in Mainz's Fischtor Square on the anniversary of the June 17, 1953, popular uprising in the former GDR, with the inscription "Germany is indivisible". It contains the majority of the names of former German cities east of the Oder and Neisse rivers, which were under Polish or Russian administration at the time, and of cities in the former German Democratic Republic.
